If we take the perspective of post-colonial criticism, we would define \"Manifest Destiny\" differently today. We would say that the term refers to the Eurocentric ideology that supported the territiorial expansion in the 1840\'s in the United States. In the 19th centruy, people who believed in Manifest Destiny claimed that the United States should rule all North America not only because the U.S. had the economic and political superiority, but also because it was God\'s will that the United States should do so. In retrospect, we can clearly see that this self-righteous idea made all non-European peoples-American Indians, African Americans, Asian immigrants and Mexican immigrants seem inferior to whites in the expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Economically, the westward expansion was a capitalist expansion from a European vision; non-Europeans were the army of cheap labor or, in the case of American Indians, suppliers of \"free\" land and other natural resources. Thus non-Europeans were not ranked as equals politically, civilly and even culturally. One of the dire consequences of Manifest Destiny was the genocide of American Indians. Manifest Destiny also made Americans of non-European origins seem less American of more foreign. Traces of Manifest Destiny still surface in the name of patriotism and nationalism in the United States today. The phrase \"Manifest Destiny\" was first used in 1845 by \'John L. O\'Sullivan in an article on the annexation of Texas. 以上是原文,在网上找的 试卷里的题目设置如下(有两个记不清楚) 1. take 和perspective 中间加the 2. different 改成 differently 3. support 改成 supported 4. people 和 believed间加 who 5. not 和 because间加only 6. it was God\'s will后面加that 7. we can clear see that 改成clearly 8. seem more inferior 这里的more去掉 9. natural sources 改成 resources 10. ranked equals 中间加as 11. of the dire consequences (of 前面加One) 12. in United States 添加the 13. in 1845 of \"John L 把of改成by 19广外英语学硕MA考研答疑QQ群:627615784 加入广外考研各专业微信交流群 请加微信号:gdufskaoyan / gdufsky(备注年份+报考业) 获取免费直播课入场链接 |
