If we take the perspective of post-colonial criticism, we would define \"Manifest Destiny\" differently today. We would say that the term refers to the Eurocentric ideology that supported the territiorial expansion in the 1840\'s in the United States. In the 19th centruy, people who believed in Manifest Destiny claimed that the United States should rule all North America not only because the U.S. had the economic and political superiority, but also because it was God\'s will that the United States should do so. In retrospect, we can clearly see that this self-righteous idea made all non-European peoples-American Indians, African Americans, Asian immigrants and Mexican immigrants seem inferior to whites in the expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Economically, the westward expansion was a capitalist expansion from a European vision; non-Europeans were the army of cheap labor or, in the case of American Indians, suppliers of \"free\" land and other natural resources. Thus non-Europeans were not ranked as equals politically, civilly and even culturally. One of the dire consequences of Manifest Destiny was the genocide of American Indians. Manifest Destiny also made Americans of non-European origins seem less American of more foreign. Traces of Manifest Destiny still surface in the name of patriotism and nationalism in the United States today. The phrase \"Manifest Destiny\" was first used in 1845 by \'John L. O\'Sullivan in an article on the annexation of Texas.
